The core difference between prototype and figurine

1. Different definitions and core purposes

• Prototype: Also known as a sample or sample piece, it is a crucial prototype in the research and development stage of industrial products. Its core function is to verify the feasibility of product design, identify defects in appearance, structure, and function, and avoid the risk of scrap caused by direct mass production. It is an essential part of the product development process in manufacturing. For example, prototypes are made and tested before mass production of mobile phones, home appliances, and mechanical parts.

• Gashapon: It belongs to the category of collectible models. Originally, it referred to unpainted resin kits that require players to polish, assemble, and paint themselves. Nowadays, in mainland China, it usually refers to finished models based on ACGN characters, film and television IPs, etc. The core purpose is to play with and collect them, making them cultural consumption-related merchandise.

2. Different materials and processes

• Prototype: With a rich variety of materials, including plastic, silicone, metal, clay, etc., prototypes are selected according to product testing requirements. The process focuses on structural replication and functional verification, and prototypes are generally produced in batches by factories according to design drawings.

• Gashapon: Traditionally, resin was the main material (white mold kit), but now PVC painted finished products are more common. The craftsmanship focuses on the fineness of appearance and ornamental value. Some high-end gashapon require manual painting, which demands high artistic skills and tool requirements.

3. Different application scenarios

• Prototype: It is applied to industrial product development and generally circulates between enterprises and design studios for internal testing or customer confirmation. It is not intended to be sold on a large scale as a commodity to ordinary consumers.

• Figurines: Targeted at anime enthusiasts and collectors, they are sold in anime stores and the collectible toy sections of e-commerce platforms, featuring clear IP attributes (such as anime characters and film and television images).
